Inspired by an hourglass in both form and function, We are not in this alone explores the poetic relationship between microorganisms and humans, as well as form, time and light. Sourcing its light from Bioluminescence, found everywhere on earth but most abundantly in the ocean, the lamp shines due to a natural biological phenomenon. The unicellular algae uses the daylight hours to photosynthesise, allowing it to emit bioluminescence come evening, once sea-like movements are activated by the users through gentle rotations. Breaking down the common narrative of on-demand light, We are not in this alone encourages its user to readdress nature’s role in providing light on its schedule rather than our own and reminds us of our co-dependency on this earth.
The lamp’s design received recognition by the Worth Project in 2020. Produced in a limited edition.
